Women of Power, Powerful Women

Women of Power, Powerful Women
Presented by: Gallery 888

Exhibition of artwork by Lynn Kelly. This exhibiton pertains to women who exercised power and influenced history

Lynn Kelly is concerned that women have been marginalized throughout recorded history. She notes that, in ancient times, some cultures, such as the Irish, accorded women equal status; women were philosophers, mothers, intellectuals, and artists; they were poets, protectors, goddesses, and warriors. When one looks back far enough, to the time of matriarchal societies, even the Goddesses had more, often supreme, power. She believes the subjugation of women likely began in a time when “might was right” and that it worsened significantly when men used organized religion to reassert their power in a less physical world. It may even have begun, she says, when women were put on pedestals, as the “bringers of life” in a time before men’s contribution to reproduction was understood. The history of marginalization, while providing an interesting discussion for another time, is not the focus here. Instead, her work focuses on women from the past who wielded great power and the contributions made by those women.
Kelly's paintings contain symbols from the women’s stories and images from their lands and cultures. In “Brighid” the Giant’s Causeway serves to reference Ireland, while the stone itself implies both ancient times and the passage of time, continuity and the Earth. Lozen, an Apache warrior and shaman, is shown with tepees and mustangs; while one represents Lozen’s way of life and the other her spirit, both are dying just as she did. Interpreting ancient stories and historic events in a symbolic and meaningful way, this exhibition awakens your curiosity of what else these women did and what other women may have done. It leads one to think there must be more to know and much, much more to learn.
