Host: Louise Bak
One of Canada's most promising, versatile and truly independent filmmakers, Andrea Dorfman graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1995 and then wrote, directed, shot and edited several experimental and dramatic short films that toured the international festival circuit. Dorfman then produced, wrote, shot and directed her first feature film, Parsley Days (2000). It premiered to great acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival® and was named one of Canada's Top Ten films of the year. After directing, producing and co-writing three seasons of the award-winning CBC-TV series "Street Cents", Dorfman made her sophomore feature Love That Boy (2003), which drew consistently positive reviews upon its theatrical release. Most recently, Dorfman's full length documentary, Sluts (2006) was broadcast on the LIFE Network and the Independent Film Channel. She is currently in development with two feature films, Crème de la Crème and Marigold with co-writer Jennifer Deyell as well as another documentary, Flawed, with the NFB.
Eldon Garnet was the editor of IMPULSE, an influential international magazine of art and culture. Simultaneously pursuing his interests in visual art, theory, and literature, Garnet has become one of Canada's most original contemporary artists, with exhibits at the National Gallery of Canada, Centre Georges Pompidou, Kunsthalle Dusseldorf, and the Amsterdams Centrum voor Fotograpfie. He is the author of Reading Brooke Shields: The Garden of Failure (Semiotext(e), 1995, called by The Toronto Globe & Mail "a terrific book, an unforgettable pop novel."
Karilynn Ming Ho is an interdisciplinary artist. Her work aims to thoughtfully deal with issues in the politics of representation by way of performance, video and installation. Karilynn Ming Ho has exhibited at Images Festival (Toronto), The Western Front (Vancouver]) and Festival Nemo (Paris).
Katie Stelmanis: Armed with a keyboard and backed by a wall of pre-assembled midi madness, Katie Stelmanis' music is endlessly evocative, with strong and scattered beats riding alongside dense synth melodies and vibrato-laden vocal swoops. On top of being a talented beat-maker, Stelmanis possesses one mean set of vocal chords, with a tone that falls somewhere between opera-house class and punk rock crass. Taking cues from Reznor, Amos and Mercury, the end result sounds as if the Anticon crew and Patrick Wolf teamed up to convince Kate Bush to sing over drill and bass beats at the top of her lungs. She will be performing with Maya Postepski, an exceptionally talented percussionist who despite her youth as already toured worldwide with renound pop musicians and classical orchestras. An EP will be released very shortly.
