Founded in 1998, the AfriCan Theatre Ensemble's mandate is to "promote the public's appreciation of diverse traditions in theatre arts". Its starting point is African drama that many Canadians have not had a chance to see. The uniqueness of African drama as seen by the Ensemble is the opportunity to present the legends, histories, mythologies, realities, and theatrical idioms from which the various playwrights tap: and to show how the local experience also addresses universal emotions and themes.
