Spin Gallery

SPIN Gallery was founded in April 2000 in Toronto by artist Juno Youn and professional artist management Stewart H. Pollock. Our first gallery was a small, street level, space situated on Queen Street West in Toronto's West Queen West Gallery district. Since the beginning, SPIN Gallery has been committed to showcasing Canadian and International artists and continues to do so in the new space. In the spring of 2001, SPIN Gallery relocated to the West Queen West Gallery district. We installed our gallery into a 3,000 square foot space with wood beam ceilings, concrete floors, and street level windows. Two years later we decided to move back to Queen Street West, the birthplace of SPIN Gallery. The new location, 1100 Queen St West 2nd floor, is about 5,000 sq ft. The gallery contains hard wood floors, high, wood beam ceilings, three large arched, antique windows, 5 skylights, an industrial kitchen, and an innovative washroom. Additionally, the gallery houses a small projection room, an emerging artist showcase, an A/V system, the main office, and plenty of storage space. Once upon a time the gallery was a coca-cola factory. It was later converted into an Italian soda factory, and then into a restaurant supplies outlet. It still has a lot of character after 5 months of massive renovations! The gallery is mainly showcasing our gallery artists and invited artists as well as open to corporate events, to private events, feature films/ commercials. (Please see 'Bookings') The SPIN Gallery's aim is to promote Canadian artists and, in doing so, to build a bridge with the international art scene. SPIN Gallery presents intriguing new artists while continuing to promote the artists it has helped establish. The acronym SPIN is drawn from sculpture, painting, photography, installation, and new media. During its four years of operation, the gallery exhibitions have included many talented, national and internationally acclaimed icons like Michael Stipe (R.E.M.), Producer and musician Daniel Lanois, Photographer/Music Video Director/Film Maker, Floria Sigismondi, Governor General Award winner John Scott, acclaimed fashion photographer George Whiteside, and Canadian icon artists such as Andy Fabo, Fiona Smyth, and among many others. The Gallery has participated in many international art fairs including Art ENIM 2003, ENIM FRANCE, 3rd Toronto International Art Fair 2002, Salon de Printemps au Montreal 2002, World Calligraphy Biennale, South Korea 2003 and OPEN 2000 in Venice. SPIN was voted by NOW Magazine readers (Toronto's weekly Magazine) as Best Commercial Gallery of the year 2002 and ranked in the top 10 for Galleries in Toronto by Toronto.com in 2002. The Gallery was also nominated for the 1st Steam Whistle Art Awards for Best Opening and Best Group Exhibition (IN-SEX) 2003. The gallery's program has an open structure. We are interested in educating the public with our knowledge and experience about the ever growing Canadian art scene. While we are working with our own artists, we also produce interesting projects such as exhibitions with pop culture themes like Fashion Queen 2000, and 2002-2004, SPIN THAT MUSIC 2002 - 2004.
