Celebration of Menaka Thakkar's 40 years in Canada
“In the Further Soil” is subtitled the transplantation of a dance tradition because it illustrates the journey that Ms. Thakkar has forged in founding the first professional school of Indian dance in Canada as well as founding the first professional Indian dance performance company. The 2011 remount will feature 20 company dancers and some students from the school performing in classical Bharatanatyam, Odissi and contemporary works.
Rabindranath Tagore has been a major influence on the creation and production of Menaka Thakkar. Following intermission, Ms. Thakkar will pay tribute to Tagore through a solo performance of his dramatic poem “Karna Kunti” which is a story taken from the Mahabharata based on an encounter between a fostered son and his long-lost natural birth mother. Devotees of Indian dance will not want to miss this rare performance by Canada’s finest practitioner of the art of expressional dance known as “Abhinaya”
