On Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 8 p.m. the Academy Concert Series will present “Bach and the King” - The Musical Offering in its entirety performed by Rona Goldensher (baroque violin), Laura Jones (baroque cello), Nicolai Tarasov (baroque oboe/recorder) and Paul Jenkins (harpsichord)
The Musical Offering is not only a monument to Bach’s contrapuntal genius, it is also a brilliantly enigmatic response to the challenge set before him by the King. In 1747 during Bach’s visit to his court, Frederick the Great of Prussia, enlightened monarch and amateur composer, asked Bach to spontaneously improvise a fugue on a theme specially prepared by the King ahead of time as a test to Bach’s skill. While elements in the royal theme posed special challenges for contrapuntal treatment, Bach not only played to the monarch’s astonishment, he also secured permission to write a full composition for later presentation to the King.
Once home, Bach incorporated the royal theme into an ingenious, multi-interpretable series of twelve canons, fugues and one Trio Sonata, which he subsequently presented to Frederick as the Musikalisches Opfer. Without equal in symmetry and proportion, this unique chamber music work performed by The Academy Concert Series promises an evening of musical discoveries and delights.
The concert is presented by the Academy Concert Series, a Toronto-based organization founded in 1991, which, with the generous support of the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council and individual donors, presents and promotes music performed in a historically-informed style on original instruments by Toronto and international musicians
