Brentano String Quartet
Presented by: Music Toronto

This season opener string quartet marks the opening of MTO’s 37th season.

The sponsor of this evening’s concert is the distinguished law firm of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, sponsor of the opening night of our quartets series since 1992.

We really enjoyed the Brentano’s Bach project in Nov. 03, and wanted to hear them again.

Formed in 1992, the Brentano captured both the Naumburg Chamber Music Award (1995) and the first Cleveland Quartet Award (1996). In 1996 the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center invited them to be the inaugural members of Chamber Music Society Two. The Quartet had its first European tour in 1997, and was honoured in the U.K. with the Royal Philharmonic Award for Most Outstanding Debut for their debut recital at London's Wigmore Hall; the Quartet later served as the hall's Quartet-in-residence in the 2000-01 season.

In 1998, cellist Nina Lee joined the quartet, succeeding founding member Michael Kannen. The next year, the quartet - violinists Mark Steinberg and Serena Canin and violist Misha Amory – became the first Resident Quartet at Princeton University. The quartet is named for Antonie Brentano, whom many scholars believe was Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved,” the intended recipient of his famous love confessions.

The Brentano has recorded the Opus 71 quartets of Haydn and most recently for Aeon records the K 464 quartet and the K 593 quintet of Mozart with violist Hsun-Yun Huang (who appears with the Cecilia Quartet on Feb. 5).

The Brentano performs around the world to critical acclaim such as this statement from The Times (London) Jan. 30/08: Balance and intonation reach an almost unearthly level of perfection. The New Yorker on May 5/08 labelled the Brentano one of America’s finest, brainiest young quartets.

Please note change of programme:

Haydn -- String Quartet in G minor, Op. 20, No. 3

Arnold Schönberg -- String Quartet No. (1936)CANCELLED

Mozart -- String Quartet in Bb-Major, KV 589

- intermission -

The Brentano regret that they were not able to prepare the Schönberg for this concert.
