Frank Mädler and Harold Edgerton
Presented by: Corkin Gallery

New works by Frank Mädler Südwest and exhibition of photographs by Harold Edgerton

Corkin Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by Leipzig-based Frank Mädler. Südwest consists of large, abstract photographs of familiar, or seemingly familiar, landscapes. The works are enigmatic and dream-like, with little evidence of human engagement or narrative potential. Existing out of context, the photographs are strikingly simple, elegant images that bear little resemblance to the depicted scenes. Like much of Mädler's work, these ambiguous compositions call attention to the relationship between the passage of time and its visual representation.

Photographs by Harold Edgerton investigate aspects of motion, the human form and phenomena too fast for the eye to perceive. Edgerton was a professor of electrical engineering at MIT and the inventor of the strobe light, which allowed him to literally freeze objects in the frame of the photograph. Edgerton, commonly known as "Doc", produced a body of work that had a significant influence on major photographers of the 20th century, including André Kertész. Throughout his life Edgerton invented and patented many scientific discoveries, donating the proceeds of all his discoveries to charity. He lived off his salary as a professor at MIT, where he was active until his death in 1990.
