The festival is highlighted by a performance from the Korean Buddhist monks from Bongwon Temple, as well as the Mi Young Kim Dance Company, Denise Fujiwara, Peter Chin and Sashar Zarif.
Under the artistic direction of Mi Young Kim, the SooRyu Dance Festival presents national and international guest artists in a weekend that celebrates diversity and multiculturalism in dance. All the performances, while steeped in traditional forms and stories, are fused with contemporary influences and speak to the 2008 festival theme of ritual. The SooRyu Dance Festival is a DanceWorks CoWorks series event and part of Harbourfront Centre’s NextSteps program.
This year’s three-day festival program is called EUI-SIK MU, which roughly translated means “ritual dance” – particularly rituals of joy and/or lamentation. As the centerpiece of the program, SooRyu Dance Festival 2008 will be host the Buddhist monks from Bongwon Temple, Seoul. These special guests will perform one of the most important and elaborate performance ceremonies in the Korean Buddhist and artistic canon, The Yeongsanjae Ceremony. This ritual, which uses dance, drumming, and chanting is the basis much of Korean traditional dance. The monks are highly trained and disciplined professionals, and have presented this program in prestigious theatres and festivals across Europe and North America.
The SooRyu Dance Festival 2008 will present works from the Mi Young Kim Dance Company repertoire, and will feature acclaimed choreographers Denise Fujiwara, Peter Chin, and Sashar Zarif. All of them will present works that are steeped in a sense of ceremony and spirituality and are in concordance with the theme of EUI-SIK MU, ritual dance.
The Festival:
SooRyu, which means flowing water, is the highlight of the Korean Dance Studies Society of Canada’s performance year. The SooRyu Dance Festival curates and presents the work of established and emerging dance artists of divers cultural backgrounds. United under a thematic program, these vibrant dances provide insight into the many rich cultures and expressions among us in our modern multi-cultural exchange.
