Artspan traces the creative journeys of ten individuals, with an age span of six decades, whose paths were influenced by the student/teacher relationship.
With this exhibition, we will have a better understanding of how our creative lives can be shaped by these early encounters.
This story begins with an art teacher, Earla Alexander and her student of five years at Etobicoke Collegiate, Nancy Newton. After beginning her teaching career in the elementary panel, Newton became a secondary school visual arts teacher, first at former Vincent Massey Collegiate, followed by Kipling Collegiate.
This exhibit features eight of Newton's students from the early seventies up until a few years before her retirement from teaching. The students from Vincent Massey are Teresa Ascencao, Grace Channer, Gene Machida, Todd McDougall and Tony Venditello; while the students from Kipling are Jisun Chun, Christy Hayhoe and Tariq Sami.
Both teachers and students alike have continued their creative journeys, whether in graphic design, painting, filmmaking, teaching or music. Now the student/teacher relationship has ended and we are friends and mentors to one another.
Opening Reception: Sunday, September 14, 1 pm - 4 pm
