2008 China Vintage and Documentary Photography Show
Presented by: Not Available

Showing of symbolic documentary photography by pioneering documentary photographer Zhang Xinming

30 years of China's mass urbanization as witnessed by a pioneering documentary photographer, Zhang Xinming who currently lives in Shenzhen. This is his first Toronto showing of Symbolic Documentary photography. You won't want to miss it!

At the same time, we will also present a series of vintage photogravures of the Yangtze River's "Three Gorges" by Shanghai's Donald Mennie, taken in the 1920's. And, in addition, a long-forgotten tragic Chinese photographer, Zheng Mingyu's rare vintage images, which were rediscovered in 2008.

As part of the exhibition, CAMERA LUCIDA photographs will show a group of Chinese images ranging from the 19th century to 2008.

Getting there: The closest intersection is Sheppard Avenue East and Progress Avenue. We are at the south east corner, just one block east of Markham Road. If you are driving on Highway 401, exit at Markham Road North. Entrance to the parking lot is on Progress, south of Sheppard Avenue. How to get here by bus If you are taking the TTC, you can take either the Sheppard, Progress, or Markham bus. On the subway, you can change to the Sheppard East bus at either the Sheppard or Don Mills stations, the Progress bus at the Scarborough Town Centre station, or the Markham bus at the Warden station. If you take the Sheppard bus, you should take a route that will go as far as Morningside, Meadowvale, the Rouge Hill GO Station, or the Metro Zoo (e.g., 85, 85A, 85B, 85D, 85E, 85F, or 85J); some routes (85C, 85G, most 85S) will not stop on Progress. Also note that routes 85 and 85A may short turn (i.e., change routing so that it will not reach Progress) any time. When in doubt, ask the driver to make sure. It takes about half an hour to get here from Don Mills station by bus. If you take the Progress bus, make sure you take either of the 134 or 134B buses; other routes (134A and 134C) will not stop on Sheppard. Note: If you are coming from the south, you should get off the bus when you see the blue “Burrows Hall” sign on your right. If you take the Markham bus (route 102), you can get off at Sheppard and walk one block east to Progress Avenue. Note: The short-turning 102S bus reaches Sheppard Avenue; it is safe to take this bus if you are coming from the north. It takes about half an hour to get here from Warden Station by bus.
