A spellbinding journey blending Contemporary Dance and Butoh depicts a poetic inner-struggle of finding “white”.
White takes the stage as a struggle between light and dark. The beautifully moving White depicts a life struggle into white – purity, innocence and beauty – from the dark place where life begins. Choreographer and dancer Xing Bang Fu draws on his dynamic, eclectic style and captivates audience through his struggles in darkness and his journey through the ups and downs of finding white.
White features renowned principle dancer Xing Bang Fu, whose Butoh-inspired signature and dramatic stagecraft take the audience on spellbinding journey. The poetic imagery draws out a double meaning in the internal struggle of finding White – a colour that presents a juxtaposition of symbolism – purity in the west and death in the east. Beautifully textured, sacred and haunting, the surreal atmosphere speaks to ritual while digging the roots of a visceral physicality. As a fragile and powerful as a dream, this new work is an awe-inspiring experience, supported by a cast of statuesque dancers. Xing Dance Theatre’s unique fusion of eastern and western movement disciplines blends aesthetics to create bold and enchanting metaphors.
Artistic Director of Xing Dance Theatre, Xing Ban Fu, brings us this first piece of his trilogy to the stage in October, with the next two pieces to follow over the next year. The second piece in this series is a serving of the sharp and crude, where Black exposes a raw reality and offsets the soft wishful-ness of White. The third piece, entitled Red, offers the contrast of colour, emotionally balancing between White and Black, and a realm of bright energy and possibility.
