Svona by Svava Juliusson
Presented by: WeSee Inc. Studio

A woven mass of cable ties is caught in a state of perpetual flux with the potential of becoming a wing, a shadow, a cloud or a landmass.

This installation, entitled Svona, has at its centre an object which might resemble a wing, a reference to a bird of the artist’s previous fascination, but it also alludes to the possibility of transforming or becoming something else – a shadow, an impression of cloud or a suspended land formation.

The material that makes up the work Svona is ubiquitous - we recognize the plastic from the things we all perpetually consume and accumulate. Plastic bottles, cups and containers, the packaging from electronic goods tossed into the trash or recycling bin by some of us. For others, this detritus is collected, sorted and stored for a potential use or function. Juliusson recently became overwhelmed with the clutter of mostly plastic stuff that had been accumulating in closets, cupboards and bins in her home and studio. But rather than taking it all to the landfill as was her first instinct, she began to re-assemble, or re-invent the accrual. Svona, which in Icelandic can be understood to mean ‘this way’, is one of these assemblages. For Juliusson, when a plastic cable tie is used ‘this way’ – woven and tied into a mass - it carries with it a potential to transform and become something else.
