Nightwood Theatre proudly announces that the first show of its 2008/2009 season will be the world premiere of Helen Humphreys’ Wild Dogs, arranged for the stage by Anne Hardcastle. Wild Dogs will be produced in association with the Canadian Stage Company. Wild Dogs is a haunting, thrilling tale that strips away the conventions of love to reveal deeper truths. Wild Dogs won the 2005 Lambda Award for fiction; was one of NOW Magazine’s Top 10 Books of 2004; and has been optioned for film.
"A perspective on love and loss [that] will haunt you for days." Entertainment Weekly
“Love is like... wild dogs. If it hunts you down, it will not let you go.” From Wild Dogs
Each evening at dusk, six people gather at the edge of the woods, calling their dogs back – dogs that have turned wild and vanished from their lives. There’s Lily, simple and considered irresponsible; Jamie, a teen with an attraction to bad company; old Walter who knows his family only tolerates him; Malcolm, an artist with a secret; Rachel, a wildlife biologist who remains distant; and Alice, on the run from a bad relationship. When Alice is invited to move to a cabin on land owned by Malcolm, his motives appear suspicious. Soon it becomes clear these people are calling out for something that cannot be captured in names or words. Drawn together by need, this unlikely group forms a community – until violence strikes unexpectedly.
An unforgettable story about the wild in all of us.
