May 2008 Exhibition at T3 Gallery
Presented by: Not Available

Carmella Karijo Rother: Mixed Media Art Textiles and Chaka Chikodzi: Shona Stone Sculpture of Zimbabwe

Camella Karijo Rother’s mixed media works in textile and other materials allude to traditional “women’s crafts” such as quilt making. In Rother’s pieces, these techniques become a means of exploring ways to craft complex compositions from simple visual elements. Ironically, the result can be reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism, a movement which largely excluded women from its practice. Her motivation comes from the distillation and crossover of everyday experiences, stored memories, and tangled impressions which she interprets with fabric, thread by thread.

Chaka Chikodzi, a renowned master stone-carver of the Shona Zimbabwean sculptural tradition, actively promotes the depth and breadth of Zimbabwean culture through his colourfully veined and patterned indigenous Zimbabwean stone sculptural carvings.
