Sirens and Missed Connections
Presented by: Not Available

Jessica Nicol's new series is part autobiographical of her own life experiences and part observational of the woman within her social circle. Angela Young seeks inspiration from stranger's electronic love letters that she finds posted on the Internet.

Jessica Nicol explores the significance of stereotypes in today's society. She investigates how women she defines as "sirens" use disguise or manipulates their feminine power. The paintings are named after the conceived animal characteristics that Jessica feels each woman illustrates; a chameleon, fox, swan and peacock.

Sirens from early Greek mythology are believed to be a group of sea nymphs who by their very nature charm men with their beautiful singing. Sailors are lured by their seductive voices only to be lead to their own destruction. Sirens are believed to sing when it is stormy but weep when the weather is fair. The moral of this story is to show that those who take delight in worldly pleasures will become the devil's prey. This notion confronts the seductive, but often demonized portrayal of woman.

Angela Young seeks inspiration from stranger's electronic love letters that she finds posted on the Internet. Full of cliché and poor grammar Angela identifies something within herself with these electronic, message-in-a-bottle systems. Love letters written by men, women, gay or straight soul searchers soon filtered into the text of her paintings. These secondary sources of communication acted as a mechanism for dealing with life, love, and disaster.
