Prokofiev & Brahms
Presented by: Toronto Symphony Orchestra
Toronto Symphony Orchestra
Hans Graf returns to the TSO, conducting music by Prokofiev and Brahms, and an evocative work by Vancouver-based composer Rodney Sharman. Brahms' two clarinet sonatas, written in the late years of his life, are tinged with melancholy and nostalgia; principal clarinettist Joaquin ValdepeƱas performs Berio's inspired reworking of the first of these magnificent works. Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony, composed while he was secluded at an artists' retreat during the war, is a work of heroic grandeur intended as a celebration of "the free and happy man."
