100 voice choir sings gospel anthems of yesterday and today
The York University Gospel Choir will lift your spirits November 27 and 28 with the power of the most inspirational gospel anthems of yesterday and today. Directed by powerhouse Professor Karen Burke, the 100-voice choir will be joined by special guest, legendary sax player Mike Murley, and backed by a rhythm section directed by Corey Butler.
The program includes works by Kirk Whalum, Joe Pace, Kirk Franklin and Hezekiah Walker -
composers Burke describes as the “Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin of the gospel world”.
Faculty colleagues in York’s Music Department, Murley and Burke are among the most respected Toronto artists in their fields. A tremendous songwriter in her own right, Burke co-founded the Juno Award-winning Toronto Mass Choir in 1988 and continues to serve as its principal director, touring nationally and internationally. Her work on the stage and in the studio includes collaborations with Alvin Slaughter, Jean Ashworth Bartle and Jackie Richardson. Murley, who heads York’s jazz studies area, was declared “one of the key players of his generation” by the Globe and Mail. He is an eight-time winner of the Jazz Report’s ‘saxophonist of the year’ distinction and has nine Juno Award-winning recordings to his credit.
