Founded by Trinidadian dancer/choreographer Ronald Taylor in 1993, Canboulay Dance Theatre explores diasporic African and Caribbean cultural, political and spiritual influences through a fusion with contemporary dance forms. Derived from the Creole French "Cannes Brulés", the company's name refers to the celebrations of enslaved Africans in Trinidad and Tobago, held originally at the annual burning of the sugar cane fields after harvest, and later reinvigorated to mark the death of slavery.
