Caliban Arts Theatre was launched in 1996 with a commitment to develop, promote and present the work and talent of Black and diverse artists in Toronto. In 2002/03, it will produce four events: Redlight Poetry, a literary reading series; The Other Film Festival, featuring films by Black filmmakers and filmmakers of colour; Black Underground, a jazz series highlighting the talents of local musicians and vocalists; and a theatrical production of The Blue Room, written and directed by Frank Francis.
