LITERATURE FOR LIFE understands that a mother is her child’s first teacher. As such, Literature for Life is committed to supporting marginalised young mothers in their role as their child’s first teacher, by facilitating our one-of-a-kind reading circle program in Toronto’s priority neighbourhoods. Together with these at-risk parents our trained facilitators read books relevant to these teen mothers’ lives – offering them more than the tired clichés they are often faced with, allowing them a new way to articulate their own lives in a way they may not have been able to before. Through reading and sharing stories young mothers develop literacy, empathy and decision making skills which they pass on to their children, impacting two generations for the price of one. Since the organization’s founding in 2000 more than 1,700 young mothers have participated in Literature for Life’s reading circles – inspiring them to finish high school, pursue post-secondary educations, find meaningful employment and build stronger futures for themselves and their families. Helping mothers helps families. Literature for Life is helping families one book at a time.
