Prisoner of Tehran
Presented by: Contrary Company in association with Theatre Passe Muraille
Contrary Company announces the world premiere of the stage adaptation of Marina Nemat’s memoir Prisoner of Tehran
Marina Nemat was born in Tehran, Iran. At age 16, she was arrested and spent more than two years in Evin prison. She was condemned to die, but survived because a Revolutionary guard, Ali, pleaded for her life. But the price Ali exacted was high: Nemat was forced to marry him. Ironically, it was Ali’s family who eventually secured Marina’s release after Ali was assassinated. Marina rejoined her family but was further traumatized by their reluctance to acknowledge her ordeal.
