Toronto, Ontario… Join the exciting and newest voice in the Toronto Theatre scene, the Baobab Youth Theatre Group, on September 22th when they present African Women are as Strong as the Baobab Tree. For ten nights, Torontonians can experience an inspirational new work by Director Sauro Agostinho at the Berkeley Street Theatre (Downstairs).
Julia is an African woman who has endured and survived an abusive relationship at the hands of her husband. Forced to provide for her family, African Women are as Strong as the Baobab Tree is a call to arms to inspire and mobilize women of all cultures. Although an African story, this piece highlights serious women’s issues that are part of a universal struggle for all women. African Women are as Strong as the Baobab Tree will ignite hope, invoke thought, and shed light on issues that are prevalent in all cultures.
Featuring a diverse cast of fresh Toronto talent, including: Denise Bennett, Karen Simpson, Chloe Wilson, Eliane Dos Santos, Kia Cummings, René Muir Adrea Smith, Debbie-Ann Ecclestton, Gilson Rodrigues and Sauro Agostinho, this play is both laugh out loud funny, revealing and a challenging new work.
Sauro Agostinho is a Performance Artist, Playwright, Director and Producer from Angola, where he first discovered his love for the performing arts. Having been seen in numerous plays around Toronto, he has also written and directed such works as: Mama Africa, The Ashes of War – Brother Tubia, N’gunda – the immigrant, From Mars to Venus and African Women are as Strong as the Baobab Tree. Sauro is the founder and Artistic Director of the Baobab Youth Theatre Group, aimed at cultivating the talent of young people around Toronto.
Baobab Youth Theatre Group (BYTG) is a theatre company for, by, and about youth. Founded in 2005 to promote and cultivate talent in the African Diaspora of Toronto and to create work that reflects the diversity of those communities. BYTG is part of the Angolan Youth Association of Ontario (AYAO), started by a group of Angolan students. The goal of both the BYTG and the AYAO is to promote the value of education, address settlement issues and maximizing the potential of Angolan youth in Canada. African Women are as Strong as the Baobab Tree is their first major theatre production.
