Tan Dun’s Ghost Opera
Presented by: Soundstreams Canada
The powerful Ghost Opera by Tan Dun is inspired by ancient Chinese shamanism.
“Theatrical and ritualistic, Tan Dun's music sculpts sound and transforms everything into a riveting experience that is hard to define but very easy to appreciate.” - Los Angeles Times
Written for string quartet and pipa (Chinese lute), the powerful Ghost Opera by Tan Dun (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) is inspired by ancient Chinese shamanism. Not a traditional ‘opera’, the instrumentalists chant as they invoke the spirits of the dead. The evening also includes a Soundstreams commissioned World Premiere by Dorothy Chang (Canada), works by Chen Xiaoyong (China) and Chen Yi (China/USA), and features the Accordes String Quartet and renowned Chinese traditional instrumentalists.
