With the onset of the summer season, Toronto prepares to host the largest free Brazilian Event in Canada. The 2nd Annual Brazilian Day Canada, promoted by TV Globo International, will take place on Monday September 6, 2010 from 2pm to 8pm at Yonge-Dundas Square. Brazilian superstar Ivete Sangalo will headline two days of festivities that will culminate in a free concert in the heart of the city.
“We are very excited by the growth of this incredible event. To accommodate the crowds there will be a street closure around the square. A stretch of Yonge Street from Dundas St. to Shutter St. will be closed,” says Tania Nuttall, Brazilian Day Canada, Executive Producer.
Sangalo is one of the most popular and best selling Brazilian female singers to date. She has sold over 12 million albums worldwide, is the recipient of a Latin Grammy Award and many international awards. Most recently Sangalo performed on Beyonce’s Brazilian tour. Ivete Sangalo is a charismatic, energetic performer; her high energy concerts are legendary and boast elaborate sets, a 12 piece band, dancers, and beautiful costumes.
The multicultural celebration will be hosted by Globo Television star, Serginho Groisman. A well loved TV personality, Groisman hosts one of the most popular shows in Brazil “Altas Horas.” Additional performers will be announced later in the summer, and will be a blend of local musicians, and Brazilian musicians some of whom have made their home in Toronto.
This year’s event will also include festivities on Sunday September 5 from 1pm to 6pm at Yonge-Dundas Square. The public is invited to come and experience the sights, flavors, and rhythms of Brazil. Tickets will go on sale for a Feijoada, Brazil’s national dish. There will also be Capoeira, and Samba presentations, lessons and performances.
Last year over 30, 000 people attended the first Brazilian Day Canada. The Yonge and Dundas area was a sea of green and yellow, as Torontonians came out in full force in the colors of the Brazilian flag. Brazilian Day is an international celebration of Brazilian culture, sponsored by TV Globo International, and produced locally by Canada’s largest Brazilian Newspaper, Brasil News. Rogers is presenting sponsor of Brazilian Day Canada again this year and OMNI is the Canadian media sponsor. Vale is the Festival Partner and sponsor of the pre-event lunch celebrating Brazilian and Canadian business ties. Toronto is the only Canadian stop on the party that will make its way around the globe; celebrations will take place in Luanda, London, Tokyo, New York, and Miami.
